PST to UK Time Zone Guide

Everything you need to know about scheduling between Pacific Time and the United Kingdom. Covers the 8-hour gap, daylight saving changes, best meeting windows, and a complete conversion table.

Quick reference

London is 8 hours ahead of PST (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-8) and 8 hours ahead of PDT (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-7) because both zones observe daylight saving time together. The gap is constant year-round, with brief exceptions during the spring and autumn transition weeks.

The best live-meeting window is 6 AM to 9 AM Pacific (2 PM to 5 PM London). The most popular slot is 8 AM PST / 4 PM London.

PST vs UK time explained

Pacific Standard Time (PST) is UTC-8. It is observed on the US West Coast 鈥?California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and British Columbia 鈥?from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is UTC+0. It is the UK's winter time zone, observed from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March.

The difference in winter: London is 8 hours ahead of PST. When it is midnight in Los Angeles, it is 8 AM in London.

In summer, both zones shift forward by one hour: PST becomes PDT (UTC-7) and GMT becomes BST (UTC+1). Because both shift by the same amount, the 8-hour gap is maintained. The result: London is always 8 hours ahead of Pacific time for the vast majority of the year.

The transition weeks exception

There are two short windows each year when the gap temporarily changes:

  • Late March: The US switches to PDT before the UK switches to BST (by about one week). During this week, the gap is temporarily 7 hours.
  • Late October: The UK switches back to GMT before the US reverts to PST. During this week, the gap is temporarily 9 hours.

For calls scheduled around these dates, always verify using the Meeting Time Finder tool.

Best meeting hours 鈥?PST and London

Standard business hours in both locations:

  • London: 9 AM to 5 PM GMT/BST
  • Los Angeles / San Francisco: 9 AM to 5 PM PST/PDT

The shared window 鈥?when both cities are in standard business hours 鈥?is 6 AM to 9 AM Pacific (2 PM to 5 PM London).

This is a 3-hour window. It requires the US West Coast side to start early. There is no overlap at all during standard Pacific afternoon hours (after 9 AM Pacific, London has already closed for the day).

Recommended slots

  • 8 AM PST / 4 PM London 鈥?most popular; mid-morning Pacific, mid-afternoon London
  • 7 AM PST / 3 PM London 鈥?earlier Pacific start; more time for London to act on outcomes
  • 9 AM PST / 5 PM London 鈥?latest viable slot; requires London flexibility

Business hours overlap

The table below shows US West Coast times and their London equivalents during standard working hours. Times shown for winter (PST/GMT); summer (PDT/BST) produces the same London clock time because both zones shift together.

Common scheduling mistakes

Forgetting the transition weeks

The US switches to PDT in mid-March; the UK switches to BST about one week later. During that week, the gap is 7 hours, not 8. Your calendar invite may show the wrong London time if it was set up before the transition. Always recheck recurring meetings in late March and late October.

Confusing PST and PDT

PST (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-8) and PDT (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-7) differ by one hour. If you write "PST" in an invite during summer, the London side may apply the wrong offset. Always write the date and both city names in your invite, not just the timezone abbreviation.

Scheduling after 9 AM Pacific without checking

Anything after 9 AM PST (5 PM London) is outside the UK working day. Teams sometimes schedule a 10 AM Pacific call without realising it puts London at 6 PM. Use the tool below to verify before sending invites.

Not including both local times in calendar invites

Always write both times in the invite title or description 鈥?for example "8 AM PDT / 4 PM BST, 14 July". This avoids confusion when the invite is shared or forwarded across timezones.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours ahead is London compared to PST?

London is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (PST) year-round. The 8-hour gap is maintained in summer because both the US West Coast (PST 鈫?PDT) and the UK (GMT 鈫?BST) observe daylight saving time and shift by the same amount.

Does daylight saving time change the PST to UK gap?

No 鈥?both zones observe daylight saving and switch together in spring, keeping the gap at 8 hours. The only exceptions are the brief transition weeks in late March and late October when one zone has switched and the other has not yet.

What is the best time to meet between PST and London?

The best overlap window is 6 AM to 9 AM Pacific (2 PM to 5 PM London). 8 AM PST / 4 PM London is the most commonly used slot. It gives both sides a full working day before and after the call.

What Pacific times are outside London business hours?

Anything after 9 AM PST falls outside the standard UK working day. 10 AM PST is 6 PM London, 11 AM PST is 7 PM London, and noon PST is 8 PM London. After 9 AM Pacific, plan for asynchronous communication with London.
